ECD MANAGEMENT (PROGRAM CODE: LABS-10-02)

[ONE HOUNDRED TWENTY-HOUR DIPLOMA FOR ECD/CHILDCARE CENTER ADMINISTRATORS AND FACILITATORS - DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION, MONITORING AND EVALUATION]

Our experience through a number of nation-wide researches conducted on Primary Schools and Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centers witnessed the need of action-based intervention to develop necessary awareness, professional and institutional capacity and action programs to empower schools and ECD centers to leverage entire ECD system in the country. There is very little result achieved despite numerous program interventions for promoting ECD system in the country. ECDs are found to be functioning more like schools rather than child development institutions. There is hardly some evidence of proper training of the facilitators on ECD systems management, child and parental counseling, as well as material development. ECD management, monitoring, evaluation and reporting system has been observed to be highly critical everywhere in each category of ECDs – school managed as well as community managed. As a result, transfer of training skills has remained questionable. The facilitators have hardly learnt the minimum concepts including development of child psychology, physical growth, rights and protection issues, and so on. Similarly, the center environment development, maintenance and promotion of child friendliness is observed to be very poor. Use of self-made, no-cost, low-cost materials needs be swiftly advocated across the nation.

In this respect, Edify International, the parent organization of Edify International School (Lab School of Kathmandu University School of Education), intends to take institutional leadership to initiate a series of training and development programs to empower overall ECD development, management, monitoring and evaluation with a vision to make the ECDs more robust in action.

For this, the organization has already designed an action-oriented curriculum of 120 hours on the job learning and development for ECD Administrators and Facilitators (teachers). The program has been tailored to fulfil the requirements of basic understanding of child growth and development, child psychology, establishing effectively customized ECD system standards across the places of implementation, development of ECD infrastructure, materials and implementation of its daily activities. Additionally, the training curriculum focuses on establishing minimum required understanding of the concept of child, parental and support staff counseling. The monitoring, evaluation and reporting system of ECD centers is expected to be additional enlightenment to the respective participants.

Edify International intends to provide management support to Edify International School to implement a series of action-oriented training programs for ECD Facilitators and Administrators in collaboration with Kathmandu University School of Education by receiving necessary financial support from interested national and international institutions with ample interest and contribution on child protection and development related issues in Nepal.

Edify International School has been promoted as a university laboratory school that has its own philosophy in education. The school’s philosophy provides with a mandate to implement a number of programs in partnership and collaboration with the community as well as civil society organizations. As a laboratory school of Kathmandu University School of Education, the school has a vision to contribute in the field of developing capacity and necessary environment for different schools and other institutions supporting for education in the communities. Research and innovation, professional development and institutional development are some of the key thrusts of working insights of Edify Approach to Lab School System.
